Can you smile with your… Jaw? During this class, we’re thinking about how the position of our head impacts our posture. Lifting the chin has a significant impact the whole spine and our posture: contributing to the muscles at the of the shoulders and neck becoming extremely strained and overactive and the muscles in the front of the chest becoming tight and shortened. What can we do? A verbal cue that I practice myself and I’ll be sharing with you in this class is : ‘Smile With Your Jaw’ But what does that actually mean? Of course we can’t smile with our jaw!! Here’s what I mean… when we lift the chin, the definition of the jaw line is a straight line. Whereas when I slightly drop my chin, my jaw line looks like a smile that a child might draw… Smiling With My Jaw’ is a gentle and subtle movement that has postural benefits for the rest of the spine (without feeling like you’ve been put in a straight jacket!)
